Sunday evening brought an end to one of the most prolific and storied careers in WWE history as we saw The Undertaker take his metaphorical “last ride” in Orlando. A legacy forged over twenty-seven exuberant years with the company. An untouchable body of work at WrestleMania that spanned twenty-four shows and has become unquestionably legendary, to say the least. He is the absolute pinnacle of professional wrestling in terms of longevity, loyalty, respect, athleticism, and a truly larger than life character. We may certainly never ever see a man in this game quite like The Undertaker again, but his exit from the ring most definitely leaves a void that needs to be filled.
Whether you love him or hate him, Roman Reigns is the ONLY guy that can fill that void. He is the ONLY guy that was deserving enough to put the Deadman down like a dog. Let’s face it, The Undertaker had to put somebody over huge in his last match and sort of pass the torch to the next guy. Whether he’s Vince McMahon’s boy or not, Roman Reigns was the glaringly obvious choice. WWE couldn’t have booked it any better by portraying Taker as the old man that won’t ever stop fighting and making Reigns look like the younger, stronger, more dominant fighter. Reigns unmercifully beat him down and WWE just got their top heel whether they like it or not.
The Undertaker could powerbomb a 280-pound man with ease, so can’t Roman Reigns. The Undertaker was the biggest man you’d see leap over the top rope and soar through the air with the grace of an eagle, well Reigns is that guy too. The Phenom was undoubtedly one of the best in-ring workers of all time, and Reigns is one of the best of THIS time! There are so many similarities between these two men that only the blind can’t see them!
The Undertaker was a man who, in many ways, was defined by his size but would be damned if he let his size define him. He has built his legacy by defying the odds—I mean, let’s face it, he was still the top draw for WrestleMania at 52 years of age. That is quite the mammoth accomplishment in my estimation. The beauty of it all is this: Roman Reigns ended The Undertaker’s career without taking anything away from The Lord of Darkness.
So, you can feel whatever way you want until the cows come home, but the fact is that WWE did the right thing. Roman Reigns has just put the single most important feather of his career into his cap and it’s something that can never be taken away from him. He is now larger than life and must carry that torch and try to live up to the legacy that Undertaker has left behind. Some of the most memorable matches and countless great moments in the history of the business, and those can never be taken away from Undertaker.
Like everything else in life, all good things must come to an end and that’s just the way it is. Like it or not, the “yard” is now run by Roman Reigns and that’s just the way it is!
