An intense buildup that’s spanned almost three years and has been fueled by riveting animosity and scorching hatred between two gladiators, UFC Light Heavyweight Kingpin Daniel Cormier and Jon “Bones” Jones, as the two will finally square up once again and this bitter rivalry will come to a head tonight at UFC 214 in Anaheim, California. It is relatively rare to see two men that share such a common, bloodthirsty disdain for one another and equally want to shred each other into kibble and bits once that octagon door closes this evening!
Make no mistake about it, these are two of the very best in the entire world at their craft and organically demand the premier versions of each other. Daniel Cormier has waited 31 months to get his hands back on Jones after he lost a close decision in their first championship encounter. Jon Jones, on the other hand, has only fought once since that January 2015 encounter and has had to run the gamut of suspensions, fines, legal issues and having his title stripped from him after fleeing from the hit and run some two years ago.
Conversely, Cormier has defended the Light Heavyweight Championship 2 times since he captured it in 2015 after it was vacated due to the Jones’ suspension. A very interesting dynamic in this fight is how will ring rust factor into the contest? Jon Jones hasn’t fought since April of 2016, which was one of the worst performances of his career. Will he look anything like his former self who was virtually unstoppable and carving his path to combat sports immortality?
One must wonder if Cormier will step into that cage tonight to defend his title based upon skills and rigorous preparation, or a loathsome disgust for his adversary? We all know that when you start to fight with emotions, skills and game plans almost always find the back burner. Jones has made it his ultimate point to paint Cormier as a “fake” champion because he won a vacated belt and never actually defeated “Bones”. To some degree, this will weigh on the champion’s psyche going into the fight.
Jon Jones has been battling against himself and his inner demons for over 2 years and has a much larger wager at stake here. He needs to come out of this victorious in oreder to not tarnish his mystique of a near perfect fighting machine and possibly the greatest MMA fighter of all time! Many questions will be answered tonight and the bad blood will spill all over that canvas once the bell rings for this epic showcase!
If this fight doesn’t excite you enough, it is the pinnacle of 3 title fights on tap for tonight! Before Jones and Cormier attempt to dismember each other, Welterweight Champ Tyrone Woodley will have his stiffest test against the BJJ phenom, Demien Maia, who is riding a 7-fight win streak spanning over 3 years. This will certainly be the toughest test of either man’s career as both are at top form and have been blazing through welterweights like hot knives through butter! The classic knockout artist vs. submission expert showdown… another amazing, can’t miss fight!
We will also FINALLY be able to see Cris Cyborg fight for the Women’s featherweight Championship in the UFC. She is by far the most savage female I’ve ever watched compete in a cage and deserves this as much as anybody has ever deserved any title shot! Cyborg has been ripping the heads off featherweight contenders for years and has had to endure an uphill war getting to this point. if she wins, she will be the second ever UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion.
With three title fights headlining this epic extravaganza and an undercard that’ll make Ariel Helwani do backflips around the Honda Center for hours, UFC 214 is a once in a lifetime kind of card! This is the biggest card of the year and an absolute dream for any fight fan. I’m ready to enjoy a spectacular show and witness the best in the world scratch and claw for their lives!
