JOSH EPPARD (Coheed And Cambria / Weerd Science), guides you through the dark and endless abyss that is the Netflix horror section!!!

1st up…

THE VEIL

Anyone who has delved into the Netflix horror section knows that among the gems, there’re many many duds. Enough absolute disasters that just finding a decent horror flick to watch can be downright terrifying! When I was scrolling through the endless barrage of second and third rate flicks and saw The Veil my interest stirred,  mainly because it had a few decent actors in it, but stirred none the less. So I bit. (I actually say that out loud when I pick a movie. “Ok, I’ll bite.“… My wife thinks I’m an idiot)

The Veil has an interesting premise. A cult hidden away from mainstream America commits a mass suicide except for a lone survivor, a 5 yr old girl who proclaims “They’re not dead. They’re coming back,” and she might be on to something. (No spoilers) Clearly the film takes a page from the Jonestown Massacre and more so its charismatic leader Jim Jones. I’ve always found the cult dynamic an interesting one and The Veil uses it as a backdrop to tell a more supernatural story compared to say… Ti West’s The Sacrament, which was basically a retelling of the Jonestown incident.

Cults are scary shit. Hell, me and the Coheed guys had a friend years ago who fled Upstate NY to move to like… Arizona to join some cult. Never heard from him again. Hope you’re ok Orion! I’ve always had this thought in the back of my head like…. What if (insert cult leader here) was right! What if David Koresh was Jesus. What if The Heavens Gate folks right now are laughing from their spaceship while they travel to distant worlds while we stress out over stupid Earthly shit like how to pay rent or feed our kids!

Anyway, The Veil gets into some of those concepts and has some good results. SOME good results. The movie definitely hits a lag once the cat is out of the bag and devolves into a slasher film style kill fest at times. I couldn’t help but feel like they just had to fill up the time with some of these scenes. That’s not to say there aren’t any interesting and powerful deaths on display but just some of them felt a little unnecessary. I wanted to say to the movie ” Hey we know where this is headed, lets fucking get there!” You know, it’s like bands with really long songs…. Oh wait… Nevermind. All in all I gotta say The Veil is a fairly well acted lil horror piece with some decent spooks. Trust me, on Netflix, you could do a lot worse. 2.75/5
