Earlier this week, the honchos at DC and Warner Brothers blessed us with the first teaser poster for Wonder Woman. Now as expected, we’ve got our first look at Gal Gadot (of the Fast and Furious franchise) as the amazonian princess warrior in action, courtesy of the exclusive SDCC 2016 trailer! (continues below)
Directed by Patty Jenkins (Monster) and also starring Chris Pine (Star Trek) and Robin Wright (House of Cards), – the next stand-alone installment leading up to the ensemble Justice League movie, tells somewhat of her Greek god origins story and the motives that leads her to bring her gifted goddess powers to protect human civilization.
DieHard’s Reaction:
As a film junkie, naturally I have to see this film to put the pieces of continuity together as part of the DC Universe canon. But unfortunately, this trailer does NOT excite me.

It has all the right tools and Gadot is perfectly cast as Wonder Woman, but it lacks “something”, and is very reminiscent of Captain America: The First Avenger. Perhaps because both of their stories originate as period pieces and it takes my mind set out of the established comic universe.
When the first Iron Man was released, it set the benchmark for the entire Marvel universe. Sure, Thor was from Asgard, but when he came to Earth it was 2011. On the flip side of the coin, when I was introduced to Captain America, I had to start from the beginning in the World War II era and wait for him to be frozen and found over 60 years later in modern times. While staying true to the source material, it took my imagination out of the scope of the bigger picture, and I feel the same is happening here.

I’ve already been pre-conditioned on what to expect from Justice League via Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Wonder Woman’s story is one that I will have to accept and go along for the ride for the sake of understanding the direction of her character in the universe. I’m not looking forward to it, but I know I have to get through it.
This takes NOTHING away from the character, the film, or period pieces in general. It’s just taking me out of “the zone” I’ve been in with these comic book films. I’m sure this movie with do all sorts of big business, and both little girls and sexy MILFs will all be rocking Wonder Woman’s digs come Halloween. It’s just two-hours I’m not looking forward to investing in. Good thing is, I know once I get through the pre-requisite, everything else is gonna be pretty badass from there on out!
WONDER WOMAN opens in theaters on June 2, 2017.
