Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that the Padres are scouting Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval.

Yangervis Solarte currently projects to open the season as the Padres’ starting third baseman, but the club was interested in Sandoval last winter before he landed a five-year, $95 million deal with the Red Sox. His first season in Boston obviously didn’t go so well. Just because the Padres had a scout watching Sandoval doesn’t mean that a trade is imminent, but Cafardo speculates that a deal could involve James Shields, who has $65 million remaining on his contract with the Padres. Meanwhile, the Red Sox still owe $77.4 million to Sandoval. Boston would almost certainly have to throw in a very good prospect (and cover some of the money involved) to make it worth San Diego’s while.

  1. I’m hoping they make the trade. I’d rather see Travis Shaw or Brock Holt at 3B; Sox will definitely need a 6th starter for whenever Clay Buchholz goes on the DL.
